About the Author
Richard O. Straub is Professor of Psychology and founder of the Graduate Program in Health Psychology at the University of Michigan, Dearborn. After receiving his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Columbia University and serving as a National Institute of Mental Health Fellow at the University of California, Irvine, Straub joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1979. Since then, he has focused on research in health psychology, especially mind-body issues in stress, cardiovascular reactivity, and the effects of exercise on physical and psychological health. Straub’s research has been published in such journals as Health Psychology, the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, and the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. A recipient of the University of Michigan’s Distinguished Teaching Award and the Alumni Society’s Faculty Member of the Year Award, Straub is extensively involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of the Southeast Michigan Consortium for Medical Education and lecturing regularly at area teaching hospitals, Straub has created an online learning management system for medical residency programs and authored a series of web-based modules for teaching core competencies in behavioral medicine. Straub’s interest in enhancing student learning is further reflected in the study guides, instructor’s manuals, and critical thinking materials he has developed to accompany several leading psychology texts. Straub’s professional devotion to health psychology dovetails with his personal devotion to fitness and good health. He has completed hundreds of road races and marathons (including multiple Boston marathons, Ironman triathlons, and the 2009 Ironman-Hawaii World Championship), and is a nationally-ranked, USAT All-American triathlete. Joan Wall is a voice professor at Texas Woman's University, where she has taught diction courses for more than twenty years. She was a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), presenting seminars and workshops, and has had a celebrated international performing career, singing as a principal with the Metropolitan Opera, the Deutche Opera Berlin, and in concerts, operas, and recitals throughout the United States.

She has sung under the direction of such conductors as Erich Leinsdorf, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Boris Goldovsky, Alfred Wallenstein, Jean Morel, Fausto Cleva, Anshel Brusilow, and Paul Hindemith.

Wall is the author of International Phonetic Alphabet for Singers and coauthor of Diction for Singers, The Singer's Voice video series, Sing! Text and songs for voice class, and Excellence in Singing.

Robert Caldwell is president and CEO of Caldwell Publishing Company, which he founded in 1999. The company's mission is to make difficult ideas easier to teach and understand, particularly ideas in human anatomy and physiology.

Caldwell Publishing Company is now the parent company of PST...Inc., which he founded in 1987 to produce books for professional musicians.

He has authored and coauthored several best-selling books, including The Performer Prepares, Diction for Singers, the Singers' Edition Series, and his latest, the five-volume Excellence in Singing.

He has written, produced, directed, and animated several successful films, including the Human Voice series and Human Hearing series. These books and films are staples in colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad, including the Juilliard School of Music, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and Indiana University.

I love this book, and I have loved the Onion's version of satire for a very long time. Whenever I need a laugh, I go to their website.This book is built like an encyclopedia, but you have to remember it is satire. Everything in it meant to be a joke. Often, the writers combine some real, but put a twist on it. It is their specific brand of humor, which means you either appreciate and get it or it is not for you.I did not read this book from start to finish. Instead, I open up to random pages and just read what that page has to offer. This seems to be the best way to tackle this book. I have not read every entry, but every entry I have read made me laugh. I often re-read passages out loud to friends and family whenever I get the chance.The book is put together using high quality materials. The writing is top notch. And the book is funny. If you are looking for a good laugh, and gain some insight into the twisted minds of the Onion writers, you should read this book.

In the Onion's typical style, many entries have enough of a basis in history and fact to be wildly entertaining, especially if you recognize where the riffs are originating from. A good example is setting Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" in the Civil War, characterizing it as a "...semiautobiographical account of the hundreds of grotesque battlefield amputations [Alcott] performed in the waning days of the conflict. This was originally purchased as a Christmas gift. I peeked at a few entries before wrapping it up and immeditely had second thoughts. Namely, "I could keep this for myself and make a last minute run to get a replacement. They'll never know..." The recipient ended up loving the book, as did I, since I ordered myself a copy.This is a table book, you will probably read bits and pieces, not the whole thing at once. Leaving it on the table can start some interesting/hilarious discussions. It's also quite Onion-y, so if you don't know what the Onion is, you might want to find out before ordering blind (just Google it).Overall, fantastic and should come in 2-packs.

This is a wonderful reference book for information that you need. Unfortunately, my puny brain was not able to handle the awesomeness of this book. Seriously, though, this book is very cool and very funny (in most cases). Some of the humor is dry and offensive, and it definitely is an adult only book. Don't let your kids read this book, it is very naughty. Other than that, all of the pages are colored with lots of joke information, so it is clear that a lot of effort was put into making this silly book.

It's basically a satirical and comical encyclopedia. There is no narrative or anything useful in particular, but it will keep you on each page for a long time if you want to see every funny tidbit. Highly recommended if you want to just browse through something.

A randomly chosen entry from this book had us laughing out loud less often than the earlier Onion coffee table books, but since there are more entries per page that's still a lot of laughs.
