Cities of Salt, by Abdelrahman Munif

From Publishers Weekly

Originally published in Beirut in 1984, this multipage epic brings to life many of the political issues that have plagued the Mideast for most of this century. Set in an unnamed gulf country that could be Jordan sometime in the 1930s, the novel relates what happens to the bedouin inhabitants of the small oasis community of Wadi al-Uyoun when oil is discovered by Americans. Seen through the eyes of a large and varied cast of bedouin characters, the upheaval caused by the American colonization is shown in various manifestations, from the first contact with the strange foreigners ("Their smell could kill birds!" observes Miteb al-Hathal, who later leads a rebellion of Arab workers when the village of Harran has been made into an American port city) to confused and suspicious descriptions of the sinister "magic" tools brought by the Americanswhich are in fact bulldozers, automobiles, radios and telephones. The story unfolds at a stately pace over a timespan of many years and provides an endless stream of characters and events, each connected to the next by many threads of plot. Theroux's sensitive translation conveys the subtleties of ambiguity and nuance inherent to the Arab language and culture. Banned in several Mideast countries including Saudi Arabia, this is the first volume of a planned trilogy by a Paris-based Jordanian novelist who holds a law degree from the Sorbonne and a Ph.D. in oil economics from the University of Belgrade. Despite the Lawrence of Arabia setting, Munif writes from a unique vantage point; English-language readers have been given few opportunities before now to look at this situation through native eyes. From Library Journal

Banned in several Middle Eastern countries, this novel records the encounter between Americans and Arabs in an unnamed Gulf emirate in the 1930s. As oil exploration begins, the destruction of an oasis community amounts to "a breaking off, like death, that nothing and no one could ever heal." The promise inherent in the creation of a city divided into Arab and American sectors provides the novel's most striking revelation: here not merely two cultures, but two ages, meetand stand apart. Alternatively amused and bewildered by the Americans and their technological novelties, the Arabs sense in their accommodation to modernity the betrayal of their own traditions. Highly recommended, if only for its cross-cultural insights.L.M. Lewis, Eastern Kentucky Univ., RichmondCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This is one of the first of many I read about Arabia, the Empty Quarter & Bedouins. It is an excellent book which I am rereading but the heavy hard cover is really painful. It's a long novel based on facts about a village which is affected by the oil companies. The spread of oil drilling is like a cancer & the morals of the Westerns is in question as to what they did to a culture & how they behaved in front of aforeign culture. It's an eye opener & was banned in Saudi Arabia.I highly recommend for the truth about oil in the Middle East & for the authors style of writing. It's translator was excellent.

I realize the translator has been critical of reviews that suggest that this novel is about oil. Okay, so it is not about oil, but it is about an oil boom, particularly the impact that the boom has on the small Bedouin community where it takes place. Munif's boom has much in common with oil booms that took place in Pennsylvania and Texas and with the gold rush that initially began on Gen. Sutter's ranch in California, as related in Blaise Cendrars' "Gold." What sets this novel apart is that it is placed in the Arabian Desert, a place of which most westerners (including myself) have known very little. In beautiful prose, Munif exposes the culture of this oasis village bit by bit, character by character. The village, perhaps like most of Saudi Arabia, is extremely conservative. Before the arrival of the oil explorers, the Bedouins had experienced almost no exposure to other customs, styles of dress, religious beliefs or technologies. Employment by the oil company puts some money in the Bedouins' pockets, but - as one might expect - not without upsetting their social order. The oilmen, of course, are as ignorant of the Bedouins' culture as the Bedouins are of theirs. "Theirs" being, one supposes, America. The story begins in the 1930s, which happens to be the same decade in which American geologists from Standard Oil of California discovered oil in Saudi Arabia. Munif does not directly reveal that, but it seems clear enough that his novel - which is the first of a trilogy - is the story of that discovery and the subsequent formation of ARAMCO, the oil giant. The story is told through the eyes of the Bedouins. The oilmen and the Saudi royal family are seen, for the most part, as the Bedouins' adversaries. Munif maintains a continuous flow of events that render the cultural changes understandable. His main characters are three-dimensional, and by the novel's end Munif has acquainted the reader with his main characters and with life in this rural Saudi culture.About halfway through this novel, I decided I like it enough to order the second book of the trilogy. But I subsequently changed my mind because I became frustrated with having to learn so many characters. Within 600 pages Munif introduces about 300 characters, often without a hint as to whether a particular character will become a main figure or will only receive one mention. As a result, I found myself having to underline names, making lists, and frequently backing up to figure out exactly who a particular character was. Perhaps my diligence was overkill, but I am not sure I would have understood the novel adequately without doing that. Had it not been for the "over-charactered" aspect, I would have rated this novel a 5-star. It does, however, rate at least a 4 because, in an entertaining and enlightening way, it presents a perfectly believable picture of what happens to a community with roots in antiquity when it is dragged into a modern century.

Cities of salt is a historical fiction book set in an unnamed Arab country during the first half of the 20th century. It describes the changes in the place, a semi-arid desert, and its local Muslim inhabitants over this time period. Specifically, it shows how the local Arab communities are changed for the worse by the intrusion of Western individuals, Western corporations, and Western society as embodied by the oil corporations. This society begins as an egalitarian community based on family ties and extended kinships. Everybody knows and trusts each other. Gates, land titles and other ways in which individuals divide up resources do not exist, and all is shared in common. Likewise guns and violence are almost non-existent as conflicts are solved slowly and surely by long and lengthy discussions. Then Western geologists enter the scene and discover oil. Western oil corporations are quick to follow. To get access to the oilwells, and to ship them out via pipelines requires control of land, which of course is communally owned and used. To solve this dilemma, the corporations try to cajole and bribe the locals to give up rights to these lands. This often did not work, so the corporations resort to a tactic that was used against Native Americans and Africans in the previous four centuries. Specifically, the local tribes had nominal leaders. The corporate representatives would bribe these leaders with modern marvels such as the telephone, repeating guns, television, ice, etc... Slowly these local leaders would switch loyalties from their own tribes to the Westerners. Eventually, these local leaders, and their henchman, would sell out their fellow Arabs, order locals of the land needed by the oil corporations, and back up their orders with their newly acquired guns.Overall, the egalitarian, communal society that existed was transformed into a dictatorship propped up by Western oil interests. A ruling class was created that was distinct from and unrepresentative of the people at large. Oil, and the control of its acquisition, transportation, and distribution, replaced people and communal consensus as the source of power. And this is how many of the modern Arab nations came into being. All in all this is a great book, probably the best fiction book to read to understand the thinking of Al Qaeda and roots of Arab anger at America. The cloest way to describe it is the Arab world's version of America's Grapes of Wrath; the destruction of a communal and family-based way of life by modern corporations.

#89,665 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Skip to the Negreanu section. It's going to be the most informative, helpful, and profitable toward your sessions. There are a lot of variables in poker. Every person is different; therefore, everyone's approach to the game is going to be different. However, you should always stick to your style while also switching gears and playing the opposite of the table (tight in a loose game, loose in a tight game). That said, Negreanu makes some great points about appearing weak and allowing your opponent to lead (even though that will no longer work for him). The most important quote in this book (for me) was a brief mention of an old player Daniel used to know. I don't remember it word for word, but it was something along the lines of, "Why do the pushing when the donkeys will do all the pulling?" Brilliant. Then again, I'm a much better defensive player than offensive player, so it works for me -- might not work for you.The small ball approach can greatly reduce stress and give skill a much bigger role (you play smaller pots so you have to grind your way to the top opposed to losing on one unlucky hand where you lose all your chips).Recommended, but skip right to the Negreanu section. Still well worth the investment (time and money).

The book is interesting and presents Negreaunu's "small-ball" strategy for poker. If you intend to play primarily cash games, I do not recommend this book. It is largely geared toward tournament players and deals with how to develop a strategy based on position, stack size, and how high the blinds are for the tournament. As a primarily cash game player, I did not find this helpful and I don't think the tournament focus of the book was well explained by the store page before I purchased it. The book does contain good contributions from multiple big name poker players, so it's interesting to learn their perspectives. The book focuses primarily on examples of hands rather than presenting overall concepts such as hand ranges to raise preflop by position, equity, pot odds, implied odds, pot control, etc. I also worry that the "small ball" strategy the book is based on is largely outdated and works primarily on ABC poker players who do not represent what you see at casinos and online these days (predominantly loose aggressive or passive players).

Negreanu is a famous player with some incredible hand reading capabilities. This book goes through different techniques and styles of different players (Daniel included off course). It's a more advanced book so if you are just beginning I would start off with other options to understand the basics.Daniel's style is very entertaining because it permits you to play lot's off hands trying to gather several small pots and avoiding big mistakes but it's not easy to implement. You should consider that to avoid the biggest mistakes Daniel uses he's hand reading capabilites.

If you've been wondering how "small ball" works in no-limit holdem tournaments Daniel does a great job of explaining its practice and benefits. He is, after all, currently the top money winner in poker. Even if that strategy doesn't fit your style it's great to know what others are capable of and why, and you also might want to use it occasionally as a change of pace in your own game. There are plenty of example hands in this volume, but not so many you get tired of them. I think this is as good of a book on NLH as any I've read, and I think it will become a classic.

This book has advice/strategy from several players. It has advice for the novice on how to bet pre-flop in order to avoid the flop (you can read most of this if you preview the book). Also included is advice for online players & cash game players (which I found minimally useful & why I "chopped" a star). The best part & longest part of the book is the last section written by Negreanu. Unfortunately, you can't preview this section. His small ball strategy is different from that of other big time winners I've read & that makes for an interesting read. You won't find the same stuff if you read Brunson or Hansen (both recommended). After reading this section, check out the WPT finals (season 3, I believe) to see his strategy in action. As a novice player, I found the beginning novice strategy somewhat useful (you can read most of it for free) & the middle section lacking. The "nuts" of the book is definitely Negreanu's section at the end. I would recommend doing with this book what I did with Brunson's book (skip to the end).

Known for his gregarious nature and uncanny card reading abilities Daniel Negreanu is one of the all-time top money winners in No-Limit Hold’em. In this amazing book Negreanu gathers some great young poker talents in the world to provide chapters on high limit cash games, No-Limit Hold’em online and No-Limit Hold’em live tournaments. It contains an extensive section on Small Ball by Daniel Negreanu. The other experts include Evelyn Ng, Todd Brunson, Erick Lindgren, Paul Wasicka, and David Williams. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1732386900/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_taft_p1_i0

Power Hold'em has a lot of great players giving their advice on a wide variety of concepts. My favorite spot was definitely Negreanu's part on small ball, where the book goes very in depth on explaining this strategy and giving many examples. A great read for anyone wanting to learn to improve their game.
